beardancerstudios asked: Hi there. I see you've done some shooting with Melissa Trout. Could you ask for a better model? I've shot with her twice. Once under a waterfall near her home in NC and once in a factory near my home in Iowa. At the Iowa shoot there was a young model just observing and learning the ropes. Melissa was very helpful giving her advice. Ironically, that young model sent me your Back Light photo today and asked me if we could do something similar. Did you add the blue cast in PS?

Certainly Melissa Trout is a fantastic model and I have had the pleasure of collaborating with her on many occasions.  She really gets “into” the concept with enthusiasm and delivers dynamic poses or performances.  There are a good handful of other models that are equally as super, and a few of them I have had the same pleasure to work with, are: Keira Grant, Sera Ferron, Zinn Star, Candace Nirvana and CarlyErin O’Neil … just to name a few.  All have dynamic personalities and a zest for creating art.  Still, there are a few others that I NEED to work with! :)

I didn’t “add” the blue cast to the BACK LITE image in PS, that was the result of using ultra violet light to illuminate the subject. The light was placed to the right of the camera and slightly elevated and a 3x4 white foam core board was positioned above the camera and halfway between the subject and camera angled to bounce the “up going light” down to the subject.  And that’s it.

Because of the close proximity of the UV light to the subject I would STRONGLY recommend your model to wear UV protection glasses,  the UV rays can damage the retinas quickly. Model safety should be paramount and if you look closely you can see the temples of the safety glasses on Melissa in that image.

Good luck and happy shooting!
